Long Term Care Insurance Announcement

As released in February of this year, the NFL has partnered with Transamerica Life Insurance Company to provide Long Term Care insurance for retired NFL players. The details of this special benefit will be sent to alumni on a state-by state flow with the packages mailed in the upcoming week. The deadline for enrollment will be stipulated in your individual information packet as this is a limited time offer.  ALL eligible retired players are advised to apply immediately, regardless of current or past medical history. Although all long term care insurance applications are required to go through the underwriting process, this program has an acceptance criterion that is different than many other programs. You should apply even if you've previously been denied long term care insurance - you may still qualify for the benefit under this program. And, you may qualify even if you are receiving disability payments (such as from the NFL player retirement plan.)

NFL Alumni Advocacy

  • Increase in pensions for those who played prior to 1993, (Pre-'93's)
  • Increase in pensions for players that took early retirement and the Social Security Election.
  • Establishment of Group Health Insurance Plan.
  • Substantive reforms to the NFL Disability Plan including the administrative and adjudication process.
  • Additional benefits that assist alumni in their post football career life.
  • Group licensing programs and marketing programs that compensate retired players for activities that promotes the NFL
  • Legacy Fund and Rookie Wage Scale that would provide substantive increases in alumni pensions and benefits.

Dear Alumnus,

The mission of the NFL Alumni Association is to advocate for the pioneers who helped make the NFL the number one professional sports league in the world. Some of these legendary men now suffer physically and financially as a result of their contributions. While we remain optimistic that a new Collective Bargaining Agreement will include an increase in retired player pension and disability benefits, we will not allow this important issue to rest on the illusions of blind hope. Now is the time to remain focused on the comprehensive solutions represented in NFL Alumni's Campaign 2011.

Despite previous increases to the NFL's pension plan, as well as donations from the PAT fund and benefits provided through the NFL Player Care Foundation, there remains a tremendous gap in assistance and support for pre-1993 NFL players. Currently, the NFL Player Annuity Plan and the NFL Player Second Career Savings Plan have approximately $1.5 billion in assets. Those plans have been in effect since 1998 and 1993, respectively. The combined assets of those two plans, which solely benefits post-1993 eligible NFL players, is greater than the assets of the Retirement Plan which has been in existence for over 50 years.

A petition has been drafted that calls on both the NFL and the NFLPA to act immediately. To date we have received approximately 100 signatures but that is not sufficient. Increasing the NFL's financial commitment to the Retirement Plan will bring substantial and sustaining improvements to the current and future needs of ALL retired players. As we continue to lobby for increased pensions, we also ask for the following actions:

  • Streamline the process by which retired NFL players apply for disability under the Retirement Plan, as well as extend with the window for filing for total and permanent disability benefits beyond 15 years
  • Ardently support health insurance needs for Vested Players
  • Create a licensing program to compensate retired players who market the NFL and its interests
  • Enhance the post-NFL career transitioning programs, with a focus on education and the creation of business opportunities.

The NFLPA and the NFL are negotiating the best way to divide up a $9 billion industry and eventually agreements will be reached, but the voices of thousands of unified retired players must be immediately heard. Now is the time to seize this great opportunity. As in the words of Coach Mike Ditka, "IF NOT NOW, WHEN?"

Lend your voice to NFL Alumni's Campaign 2011 and be heard by signing the petition that will be hand delivered to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith. SIGN THE PETITION
